Where the RCEM examinations fit

The examination pathway moves from underpinning science and intermediate knowledge and skills to Fellowship-level clinical and professional judgement. Check current regulations before planning because eligibility, windows and delivery arrangements can change.

MRCEM Primary

The current exam is a three-hour paper of 180 single-best-answer questions testing the basic sciences that underpin Emergency Medicine. It is the first component of MRCEM; applicants should use the current blueprint and regulations rather than relying on historic exam names.

MRCEM SBA

This single-best-answer examination tests knowledge applied to the breadth of Emergency Medicine at the membership stage. It follows the Primary within the current MRCEM pathway and must be passed before applying to the MRCEM OSCE.

Review theory exam guidance

MRCEM OSCE

The clinical examination assesses practical, communication and professional performance. Current eligibility includes passing MRCEM Primary and SBA plus six months whole-time-equivalent EM experience above Foundation or equivalent post-registration experience.

MRCEM award

RCEM awards MRCEM after the required Primary, SBA and OSCE combination or accepted equivalences. In training, the examinations sit alongside workplace evidence and curricular capabilities; an exam pass is not a substitute for satisfactory progression.

FRCEM SBA and OSCE

Fellowship requires FRCEM SBA and FRCEM OSCE or accepted equivalents. Eligible candidates may take them in either order. They assess the knowledge, judgement, clinical and professional performance expected later in training.

Timing, attempts and cost need a plan

RCEM publishes application windows, delivery and fees. Current rules limit each MRCEM component to six attempts and each FRCEM component to four, with a formal additional-attempt route in defined circumstances. Check the live calendar before booking leave or study time.

Use authoritative learning resources

Start with the curriculum, exam blueprint, RCEMLearning and current regulations. Question-based practice is available from external providers, but the official blueprint should decide what you study and outdated recalled material should not decide your timing.
