Consultant-level evidence
Build a selected evidence portfolio, not an archive dump
Most panels need spoken evidence, while some employers ask for a CV, portfolio or supporting documents. Maintain a complete archive, then select examples that match this post and show consultant-level ownership, judgement and impact.
Clinical scope and safe independence
Record case mix, procedures or diagnostic scope, outcomes where appropriate, multisource feedback, complex decisions, escalation and limits. Protect confidentiality and do not use raw patient data as interview proof.
- A verified capability or service outcome with context, your decision and how safety was monitored.
- A case count with no case mix, benchmark, outcome or explanation of responsibility.
- Ask a supervisor to test your account of readiness against the target post's real workload.
Leadership and service delivery
Show the problem, authority, stakeholders, resistance, resource decision, implementation and sustained result. Distinguish formal accountability from influence without a title.
- A change with baseline, stakeholder agreement, delivery obstacles, measures and an honest limitation.
- A leadership-course certificate or committee membership without a decision or outcome.
- Reconstruct one project as a decision timeline and verify the measurable effect.
Governance, complaints and learning
Keep anonymised examples of incident response, complaint handling, guideline change, mortality review or risk reduction. Focus on candour, engagement, system learning and change rather than blaming individuals.
- Your role in immediate care, communication, analysis, action ownership and follow-up.
- Claiming no complaints or errors, or reciting an incident framework with no lived example.
- Review a real governance case and identify what you would own as the consultant.
Education, supervision, research and QI
Select evidence of programme design, learner support, research contribution, implementation and evaluation. Publications and qualifications need a clear connection to the post or service.
- A programme or project with your role, outputs, impact, feedback and next decision.
- Long publication or course lists without relevance, contribution or application.
- Choose one example in each domain and prepare the limitation as carefully as the achievement.
Keep a one-page evidence index
For each domain, record the example, dates, your action, result, measure, reflection, verifier and target-post relevance. It is a retrieval tool for preparation, not a document to hand the panel unless requested.

Apply the evidence to consultant practice
Convert an activity inventory into an auditable account of personal capability, decisions and learning.
Scope: UK-wide professional standards; recruitment evidence standards are employer-specific.
Use an evidence ledger rather than a certificate catalogue
A persuasive consultant portfolio has enough detail to establish what you were responsible for and whether you were successful. 'Led a QI project' is not adequate if the candidate only collected data. Distinguish proposal, design, implementation, analysis, stakeholder engagement and evaluation. Specify the context, your personal contribution, the outcomes measured and any subsequent changes.
Different achievements prove different things. A publication establishes scholarly contribution but not necessarily service leadership. A teaching award can demonstrate learner satisfaction but not competence in supervising struggling trainees. Pair the evidence with the claim it can honestly support.
What to establish
- For each example record: objective, baseline, your action, collaborators, result, sustainability and what you would do differently.
- Use de-identified evidence and avoid including confidential patient or staff information in preparation material.
Defend the boundaries of your clinical scope
Consultant readiness is not an assertion that you can independently deliver every conceivable subspecialty service. Panels may examine a complex case at the edge of your experience to test judgement, appropriate referral and collaborative practice. Cite evidence of graded responsibility and case discussion, and say explicitly how you would maintain skills and obtain advice.
When describing independent clinical decisions, explain why an option was chosen and what you did when uncertainty remained. 'I discussed with my consultant' is appropriate evidence during training, but it must be connected to the reasoning and autonomy expected of the advertised role.
A good reflection adds something falsifiable
A credible reflection describes a changed process or behaviour, not just a declaration that teamwork matters. For example, after discovering that a referral pathway produced ambiguous follow-up ownership, you might specify how the team clarified responsible clinicians, communicated the change and checked whether missed follow-ups declined.
Be prepared to say what did not work. Panels often learn more about the candidate's professionalism from a measured setback than from a perfectly successful project with no identifiable limitations.
Apply the teaching
A claimed 40% improvement
The CV says 'I reduced missed follow-ups by 40%'. On questioning, the candidate admits the sample was ten cases and only one month's data were collected.

Common failure: Using impressive relative figures to conceal small denominators, short follow-up or uncertain attribution.
