Entry to CCT
Training roadmap and FRCA examinations
The 2021 Anaesthetics Curriculum has three capability-based stages. A 2026 revision takes effect from 17 August 2026, and examination formats begin changing in 2027, so candidates should avoid learning an old exam map by rote.
Stage 1: CT1–CT3
Build safe generalist elective and emergency practice across the curriculum's clinical and generic professional domains. Early training is directly supervised until the IAC; later progression includes broader practice, obstetric competence milestones and completion of the Primary FRCA.
Stage 2: ST4–ST5
After competitive ST4 entry, trainees develop across the Stage 2 domains with greater independence and complete the Final FRCA requirements. The curriculum describes capabilities rather than one immutable national rotation order.
Stage 3: ST6–ST7
Stage 3 prepares for independent practice and includes broad capability completion plus at least 12 months whole-time-equivalent development in one or more Special Interest Areas. CCT follows completion of curriculum and programme requirements.
Primary FRCA transition
The current Primary includes an MCQ plus OSCE and SOE. The GMC-approved replacement launches from July 2027: two 80-question SBA papers and a 13-station Clinical Anaesthetic Sciences Exam. Candidates with a valid partial OSCE or SOE pass have specific transition arrangements for 2027–2028; check the rules for your sitting.
Final FRCA transition
The Final assesses Stage 2 knowledge and its application, with Stage 1 and professionalism still relevant. The planned new clinical component is the Final Clinical Performance Exam. Current and transition candidates must use the applicable RCoA regulations.
Learning and assessment
Expect supervised lists, simulation, workplace assessment, logbook review, reflection, teaching and self-directed study recorded in the Lifelong Learning Platform. HALOs aggregate evidence across domains; case numbers alone do not prove capability.
LTFT and flexibility
LTFT is established in anaesthetic training. Capabilities and safe exposure still need to be achieved, so calendar duration, placement sequencing and on-call patterns change. Ask a programme for its current arrangements rather than assuming a universal timetable.
