Beyond the interview
CST, MRCS and the move into a specialty
JCST describes a typical 24-month CST programme in themed or uncoupled posts. ISCP's outcomes-based curriculum assesses capability in clinic, emergency take, ward, operating list and multidisciplinary working, plus generic professional capabilities.
Early development
Build safe assessment, perioperative care, supervised operative fundamentals and an accurate eLogBook. Set learning goals with your educational supervisor and use clinic, take, ward and theatre opportunities across rotations.
Increasing independence
Use case discussion, direct observation and supervisor feedback to progress through appropriate levels of supervision. ARCP reviews documented progress; specialty-specific ST3 person specifications may require particular rotations or experience, so check them early.
MRCS Part A
The intercollegiate written examination tests the knowledge underpinning surgical practice. Many plan it during early training, but timing follows readiness and local programme expectations.
MRCS Part B
The OSCE tests clinical and practical application, communication and judgement. JCST states MRCS is a CST exit requirement before entering ST3; check the relevant ENT pathway requirements separately.
Study resources
The colleges publish the exam syllabus and candidate guidance; RCS eSurgery maps learning to ISCP. Question-based practice is also available through the site’s MSRA preparation for entry shortlisting and CST interview practice for selection; neither replaces MRCS examination guidance.
LTFT and route variation
Progress is capability based, so calendar year labels are indicative rather than an identical national sequence. LTFT and Scotland/Wales IST or run-through options affect programme length and transitions; read the current region and pathway description.
