Plan backwards
A practical route into core surgery
Plan separately for the November application, January MSRA and February evidence submission. The 2027 portfolio guide requires completed achievements by 19 February; planned work cannot be claimed as finished.
12+ months: understand the job
Spend time on a surgical take, a clinic and an operating list. Start an eLogbook and find a consultant willing to verify genuine involvement. Choose one feasible QI problem with access to baseline data and an intervention, and ask local educators where teaching is needed.
6–12 months: do the work
Complete a five-day surgical taster or, if already eligible, document a completed student elective. Run the first QI cycle and present findings to the team that can change practice. Build a four-session teaching programme and collect formal feedback if feasible.
3–6 months: close loops
Re-measure the QI change, get signed evidence and eLogbook consolidation, verify presenter/author credit, and work through official MSRA sample material. Map your strongest work to the published 2027 portfolio domains.
Final weeks: audit, then rehearse
Submit Oriel by 4pm on 19 November 2026; the national limit is five applications per recruitment round. Prepare the evidence index, remove patient identifiers and ask signatories to verify facts. Continue eligible portfolio work within the separate 19 February 2027 achievement deadline and each category's rules.
Check Oriel, then prepare the interview
For 2027, shortlisted candidates must upload the required portfolio evidence. Check your 2027 priority status in Oriel; the published Round 1 review deadline is 5pm on 24 November 2026. Upload evidence during 19–24 February 2027 and rehearse the confirmed three-minute presentation, its two-minute follow-up and two five-minute portfolio questions. Use Interview Bank mock topics for practice; follow your invitation for the actual task.
Time and money
What should you stop collecting?
Check the 2027 criterion before buying a course or starting a project. Choose useful work you can finish, verify and explain.
Five identical certificates
Use your strongest eligible achievement for each domain. Extra copies of similar certificates do not make a stronger explanation of what you contributed.
Pay-to-present posters
A fee-only display without proper selection or peer review does not meet the current presentation criteria. Keep evidence of your own attendance and delivery.
A project that cannot finish before the evidence deadline
A planned second cycle is not demonstrated change. If the evidence deadline is close, complete a useful smaller contribution and claim only what the records support.
Teaching courses mistaken for running a programme
A teacher-training attendance certificate is not a listed communication achievement. The current teaching routes require delivering teaching, with programme involvement and feedback.
Passive society membership and routine Foundation rotations
A membership badge or job title does not prove a qualifying achievement. Match the activity itself to a current descriptor and obtain the required verification.
Starting without a surgical CV
Find work that teaches you surgery
Ask for something bounded that solves a team problem. An honest small project can teach more than a nominal title.
Arrange a taster
Contact a consultant, rota coordinator or educational lead early; request five completed surgical days and ask to see clinic, theatre and take. Agree who can sign the evidence when it is finished.
Attend the whole patient pathway
Follow one patient from referral and MDT decision to consent, operation, recovery and ward review with appropriate permission. This builds a defensible view of what surgeons actually do.
Join local improvement and teaching
Ask the theatre coordinator or ward team which repeated failure is measurable and fixable. Teach a series that the foundation team requests. Build in feedback and remeasurement from the start.
Work with a collaborative
Ask a local trainee research lead for a defined task, data governance and authorship policy; ASiT lists surgical trainee collaboratives. Contribution matters more than a society badge.
