Choosing posts
Compare training environments, not league tables
Read the official programme/post information before preferencing. Check what the advertised rotations actually make possible, then discuss likely experience with the local programme team.
Footprint and travel
List every hospital and rotation distance; the same region can contain multiple commutes. Consider night travel, accommodation, partner commitments and LTFT logistics.
Theatre and emergency mix
Ask how elective lists are protected, how the emergency take is staffed and whether CT1s can attend clinic. High case volume is only useful if there is supervised learning time.
Pathway to ST3
Check themed versus uncoupled posts, exposure to your intended specialty, critical-care experience and its ST3 entry criteria. England has paused IST recruitment for 2027 while Scotland and Wales retain options; verify the current advert.
Teaching, research and support
Find MRCS teaching, mentoring, research collaboratives, supervisor availability and local GMC training-survey results. Ask how rota gaps affect access rather than assuming a tertiary badge guarantees operating time.
