How to approach it

What a strong answer needs to show

Clinical safety

Ask which senior is available on every shift and what your scope will be during induction and on call.

  • Is there cross-site cover or a lone resident doctor period?
  • Who receives escalations at night?
  • How do new-to-NHS fellows start safely on the rota?

Development that exists in the timetable

Ask who supervises you, how frequently feedback occurs and whether claimed teaching or research time is protected.

  • What is the named supervisor's role?
  • Can you access study leave and funding under this contract?
  • What evidence or appraisal support is realistic over the post's duration?

Written employment terms

Separate interview-panel discussion from the formal offer; medical staffing can clarify contract language, pay basis and status.

  • Is the contract substantive or fixed-term, and why?
  • What are base pay, enhancements, sites and notice provisions?
  • When will the written rota and terms be issued?

Turn a reassuring answer into a concrete next step

Fictional exchange: you ask about support and hear, 'There is always someone available.' A useful follow-up is, 'For a junior on the night rota, which senior is resident, who covers the other site and what is the escalation route if that person is occupied?' Ask calmly to understand the role, not to catch the panel out.

  • At interview, prioritise the two unknowns that most affect safety and fit. Take detailed pay or contract queries to medical staffing, with the vacancy reference.
  • For development, ask which session appears in the timetable and who covers clinical duties during it. Then ask a current fellow how that arrangement worked in a recent cycle.
  • Afterwards, record the answer and any promised document. If a material point remains unclear, request clarification before treating it as a basis for accepting.

Original practice questions

Questions worth practising aloud

These are original preparation prompts written around published domains and entry-level expectations. They are not recalled interview questions.

  1. What does a typical first on-call shift look like for someone new to this department?
  2. Which decisions should a fellow at this grade make independently?
  3. How is supervision protected when the service is busy?
  4. What are the written terms and reason for any fixed-term contract?

Common mistakes

Where otherwise good answers lose clarity

  • Assuming a friendly panel answer replaces a written term.
  • Failing to clarify overnight senior cover.
  • Treating a promised training opportunity as guaranteed protected time.
  • Asking only about subspecialty prestige while missing the main rota.

Preparation plan

How to practise this deliberately

  • Read all job-pack attachments and list missing information.
  • Prioritise two interview questions and send contractual details to medical staffing.
  • Request the draft rota and supervisor details.
  • Review the written offer against what you were told.
