Plan backwards from Oriel
A practical O&G ST1 application timeline
The application is a sequence of eligibility, MSRA, possible interview, national ranking, preferencing and offers. Build experiences that improve specialty understanding and spoken examples; do not manufacture a portfolio competition that the official process has not published.
12+ months: test both halves of the specialty
Arrange exposure to labour ward and acute gynaecology as well as clinic, theatre, antenatal care and multidisciplinary work. Begin one bounded QI or audit and a teaching activity that can reach an outcome. Record what the work taught you about unpredictability, consent and team decisions.
6–12 months: finish useful work
Complete data collection, present findings locally, test one change and evaluate teaching. Seek a defined research contribution rather than a vague promise of authorship. Build examples of prioritisation, conflict, communication, leadership and raising a safety concern.
3–6 months: shift serious effort to the MSRA
Use timed Professional Dilemmas and Clinical Problem Solving practice, keep an error log and revisit weak topics. Continue only projects that can genuinely finish. Map completed experiences to the current person specification and likely structured-question functions.
Final weeks: protect eligibility and exam execution
Check Foundation competence, experience limits, GMC details and reasonable-adjustment evidence. Reproduce exam conditions, plan sleep and travel, and stop buying new question banks when reviewing errors would add more value.
After the MSRA: prepare for either route
A very high score may lead directly to offers; an intermediate score may lead to interview. Prepare prioritisation, ethics or governance and structured examples while awaiting the outcome. Do not infer a future cutoff from candidate spreadsheets.
Interview and preferencing: rehearse decisions, then compare programmes
Practise short answers that tolerate interruption and follow-up. When preferencing, compare rotation footprint, labour-ward exposure, gynaecological surgery, protected teaching, simulation, LTFT, research, tertiary work and commuting rather than relying on a league table.
