National assessment
Prepare for what the MSRA actually does in O&G selection
The MSRA affects progression and final ranking. Preparation needs diagnostic review, not just volume: know why an option was safer, more professional or more clinically appropriate and test whether the lesson transfers.
Professional Dilemmas tests judgement in context
Rank or select responses using patient safety, candour, confidentiality, teamwork, workload management and appropriate escalation. Avoid rules that ignore urgency or your duty to act within competence.
Clinical Problem Solving needs broad Foundation knowledge
Revise common presentations, emergencies, prescribing, investigation and management across specialties. O&G knowledge matters, but the assessment is not an MRCOG examination and narrow specialty revision leaves avoidable gaps.
An error log should name the reasoning failure
Classify mistakes: knowledge gap, missed qualifier, poor prioritisation, unsafe escalation, changed a correct answer or ran out of time. Assign one concrete correction and retest it with a different question.
Practise timing after the method is stable
Early untimed work can expose reasoning. Later, use full timed blocks, planned guesses and review rules. Track accuracy and pacing by theme rather than treating one volatile mock percentile as a forecast.
Do not reverse-engineer unofficial cutoffs
Shortlisting capacity and the score distribution change between rounds. Candidate-reported spreadsheets can help explain anxiety but cannot establish the official bypass or interview threshold for a future cycle.
