How to approach it
What a strong answer needs to show
Separate shortlisting from interview
A self-assessment option gives a shortlist score, while the interview assesses your achievements independently. The latest official detailed process ranks appointable candidates using weighted interview marks.
- Do not add a withdrawn five-point IMT-only bonus to your 2027 estimate.
- Use the current six-domain matrix, including the revised presentation and publication values; do not add the removed IMT-only bonus.
- Pick only the highest option you can justify in each domain and keep documents ready at submission.
Check six definitions, not six certificate piles
Postgraduate qualifications, presentations/posters, publications, teaching experience, QI and teaching-methods training each have different verification tests.
- For teaching, check programme duration, your role and formal feedback.
- For QI, show your own completed cycle and measurement after change; use QIPAT where available.
- For meetings and publications, prove selection, venue/scope, actual authorship and acceptance or delivery.
Prepare a small audit pack
Under the latest detailed rules, routine upload is not required; audit or concern can prompt an evidence request. Proof must already exist when you apply.
- Make one index that maps option, completion date, proof and source.
- Use headed confirmations for real roles; ask signatories to correct inaccurate wording.
- Remove patient identifiers and translate non-English evidence; send only the requested proof in permitted file formats.
Plan for realistic improvement
Three months can support repeated teaching and a modest QI cycle; weeks cannot create a completed degree or guaranteed accepted publication.
- Ask a clinical tutor about a scheduled teaching programme and feedback forms.
- Find a governed small process change with a baseline, intervention and remeasurement.
- Treat a genuine accepted presentation as a bonus from completed work, not as a purchasable shortcut.
Original practice questions
Questions worth practising aloud
These are original preparation prompts written around published domains and entry-level expectations. They are not recalled interview questions.
- How would you substantiate the precise teaching option you intend to select?
- Which QI cycle did you personally complete, what measure changed, and what did you learn?
- Your submitted abstract is awaiting acceptance at closing. Which option can you honestly select?
- How would you describe an achievement that matters to IMT but does not qualify for a scored option?
Common mistakes
Where otherwise good answers lose clarity
- Applying 2026 IMT-only points to 2027.
- Confusing a paid attendance certificate with selected presentation evidence.
- Claiming a cycle or paper before completion or full acceptance.
- Uploading excess or identifiable patient material.
- Listing an intercalated degree or MRCP Part 1 as a scored postgraduate degree.
Preparation plan
How to practise this deliberately
- Read the 2027 notice alongside the latest detailed matrix.
- Use the hub evidence grid and collect justifying proof.
- Ask a supervisor to edit and sign only true claims.
- Practise discussing contribution and reflection in the achievements guide.
