Time and money
What not to buy or manufacture for a local post
Your vacancy is the evidence standard. Spend effort where it improves eligibility, clinical safety or the match to its duties, not on a generic pile of certificates.
A course the person specification never asks for
A paid course may teach useful skills but is not automatically a shortlisting point. Prioritise required registration, competence and affordable high-quality practice. Compare the promised learning with your actual gaps.
A project too late to finish
List honest work in progress, but do not imply a completed QI cycle or publication by the deadline. A small measured intervention you actually delivered is more defensible than a grand project title.
Passive memberships and conference attendance
These can help you learn or meet collaborators. They do not, without an action or output, prove leadership, teaching, research or hands-on clinical capability.
Over-specialising an FY3 application
A junior fellow panel needs confidence that you can work safely at the advertised grade. Do not spend the whole answer on subspecialist techniques while ignoring a ward rota, basic escalation and handover.
A short decision test
Name the gap before buying or starting anything
Write the criterion or performance problem, the evidence you already have and what the proposed activity would change. If you cannot make that link, pause. A useful activity should still be worthwhile if the next interview does not ask about it.
Required, useful or irrelevant to this application?
A specified qualification is an eligibility question. A practical course may address a real learning need without being a recruitment requirement. A membership or attendance certificate may do neither. Verify the advert before spending money, and do not assume a course author can guarantee shortlisting or competence.
Prefer a task you can finish and explain
If your teaching example lacks feedback, repeating the session after an observed improvement may be more useful than launching another programme. If your interview answer is rambling, ask a colleague to interrupt and question one real example. Choose the smallest action that fixes the actual weakness.
