Application journey
From vacancy search to starting the job
Search by duties and grade as well as job title. For each vacancy: check essential criteria, submit a specific application, prepare for the employer's assessment, then scrutinise the offer, contract and induction arrangements.
Screen the vacancy before applying
Identify grade, hospital sites, specialty, start date, length or permanency, salary basis, required registration, on-call and supervision. Download both job description and person specification; some detail exists only in attachments.
Apply against the criteria, not the title
Make each essential requirement findable in the application and give concise evidence for desirable criteria. A polished generic statement is less helpful than a truthful example of the particular clinical responsibility sought.
Confirm interview arrangements
Ask for the format, duration, panel, remote or in-person logistics, presentation brief, documents and reasonable adjustments if relevant. A clinical scenario is possible, not a universal requirement.
Offer and checks are separate from interview success
Expect employer pre-employment checks for identity, right to work, registration or qualifications, references, work health and appropriate criminal records. Do not arrange a start or leave a current post based on an informal conversation alone.
Review the written offer and induction
Request the contract or terms, pay point, rota, on-call supplement, leave, study budget, supervisor, protected development time, sites and induction before accepting. Ask how the first supervised shifts will work, especially if new to the NHS.
A usable decision trail
Keep one record from advert to start date
Save the advert, attachments, reference number and closing date when you find a post. They may disappear later. Add your submitted application and interview invitation so you can distinguish the advertised role from assumptions formed in conversation.
Before submission: resolve one uncertainty at a time
For example: 'The advert says junior fellow, but the attached rota mentions registrar cross-cover. Which duties apply to this vacancy?' Include the vacancy reference and the exact conflicting wording. A focused query is easier to answer than asking the department to review your whole CV or predict your chances.
At invitation: prepare for the task actually requested
Record format, time zone, duration, documents and any presentation instructions. If a brief is unclear, ask before creating slides. Practise with your own submitted claims: the panel may ask about a project recorded months earlier whose status has since changed.
At offer: close the gaps in writing
List conditions still outstanding, who owns each check, the proposed start date and the next update. Compare written duties and rota with the saved pack. If the role or start arrangements have changed, resolve that change with the employer before making commitments that depend on it.
