Recruitment and training source status

No national Clinical Fellow recruitment year, station blueprint or portfolio tariff. The employer's person specification, interview invitation and written contract control this post; GMC standards are UK-wide, and the cited 2026 LED contract transition is England-specific and still in progress.

Practical preparation

A timeline that works for rolling local vacancies

Unlike national training, posts appear throughout the year and may close early. Keep reusable evidence ready, then tailor each application to a real vacancy and its closing date.

6–12 months before a move

Explore the specialty, acquire safe supervised experience and record cases, teaching, audit and feedback. Resolve GMC or English-language routes early if applicable; avoid assuming a last-minute registration application will finish in time.

GMC English evidence routes

3–6 months

Choose regions and realistic grades, speak to teams, gather supervisor-confirmed evidence and compare posts. Start a manageable QI cycle or repeated teaching only if it can genuinely finish.

Vacancy opens: days to weeks

Check eligibility first; map every criterion; write and proof the supporting information; line up referees; submit before the deadline. A new major publication, completed degree or full QI cycle is unlikely to appear in the final week.

NHS Jobs application preparation

Interview invitation to offer

Build a one-page job brief, prepare six to eight real examples, revise grade-appropriate clinical emergencies, practise follow-ups aloud, verify technical logistics and prepare specific questions about the rota and support.

Use the time you actually have

Plan backwards from the next decision

Use the broad timeline above as planning horizons, not recruitment dates or promised processing times. Keep a live tracker with task, dependency, owner and next check. Registration, references and employment checks may depend on other people; a later start is sometimes more realistic than compressing them.

If the deadline is next week

First check essentials and start-date feasibility. Map existing evidence, ask one focused eligibility question if needed, draft against the criteria and leave time to check the submitted version. An unfinished project can be described accurately; starting a token project now will not create a meaningful result by the deadline.

If the interview is next week

Use the saved application and job pack. Spend one session on the role, one on a few deeply known examples and one practising grade-appropriate questions aloud with interruptions. Use feedback to correct unclear ownership or unsafe scope. Confirm logistics and prepare the two unanswered questions that most affect whether you would accept.

If the move is several months away

Choose one gap that changes eligibility or readiness, then plan supervised work that can genuinely address it. Put a review date before the next application window. Do not use a collection of low-effort certificates as a substitute for the clinical responsibility the post requires.
