Negative advice
What not to spend scarce time or money on
The goal is credible readiness for O&G selection and work. Extra cost and certificate volume do not automatically improve the MSRA or the quality of a structured answer.
Do not buy around an invented portfolio score
Some commercial pages describe a six-question O&G self-assessment and PDF evidence upload. The current national recruitment and RCOG pages do not publish that process. Verify a new official document before changing your plan.
Do not sit Part 1 MRCOG solely for recruitment points
RCOG explicitly says Part 1 is not required and gives no direct recruitment advantage. Taking it early may suit personal learning, but it should not displace MSRA work, clinical development or rest on an invented score claim.
Avoid passive memberships and attendance collections
A society subscription, webinar list or course badge rarely demonstrates what you did or learnt. Join when access to teaching, representation, research or a project justifies it.
Do not start an oversized project near the deadline
A multicentre idea that cannot recruit, analyse or report before selection supplies little usable reflection. Complete a bounded local improvement or take one defined task in an established study.
Do not confuse prestige with ownership
A national name cannot repair a vague contribution. Interview follow-up exposes whether you understood the method, made a decision or changed anything.
