Breadth of the specialty
O&G career branches and recognised subspecialties
Every O&G doctor needs broad core competence. Later careers can emphasise acute maternity care, surgery, clinics, diagnostics, procedures, research or system leadership in very different proportions.
Maternal and Fetal Medicine
Complex maternal disease, fetal diagnosis, ultrasound, invasive procedures and joint planning with neonatology, physicians, genetics and specialist midwives. It is highly patient-facing and uncertainty-heavy.
Gynaecological Oncology
Cancer diagnosis, complex surgery, MDT decisions and longitudinal communication with pathology, radiology, oncology and specialist nursing teams. Operative intensity and tertiary work are prominent.
Reproductive Medicine
Fertility assessment and treatment, endocrine and reproductive problems, ultrasound and procedures, often across NHS and independent settings. Counselling, regulation and evidence-based expectation setting matter.
Urogynaecology
Pelvic-floor symptoms, bladder dysfunction, conservative treatment, diagnostics and surgery, with physiotherapy and specialist nursing. Much work is longitudinal and quality-of-life focused.
Special interests broaden consultant jobs
Benign gynaecological surgery, endoscopy, colposcopy, menopause, abortion care, paediatric and adolescent gynaecology, labour-ward leadership, education and research can shape practice through SITMs and local service need.
