The capability-based O&G training roadmap
O&G training is normally at least seven years from ST1 to ST7. The 2024 curriculum uses three stages and assessed capabilities; rotations support progression but should not be described as a rigid identical timetable in every deanery.
Stage One builds safe core practice
Early training develops core obstetric and gynaecological assessment, emergency care, communication, professional practice, ultrasound foundations and supervised technical skills.
Stage Two increases decision-making and independence
From around ST3, trainees manage broader workload and complexity, progress operative and labour-ward capability and work towards the examinations and evidence needed for advanced training.
Stage Three prepares for consultant practice
Later training consolidates leadership, independent clinical decisions, emergency management, supervision and selected special interests. Progress depends on capabilities and ARCP evidence.
Special interest or subspecialty development starts later
From ST5, trainees normally undertake two Special Interest Training Modules or a competitive recognised subspecialty route. Local access and sequencing vary.
LTFT is compatible with training
RCOG provides LTFT guidance, including proportional out-of-hours work and the practical need to coordinate modules and placements. Duration and sequencing vary with percentage, capability and programme arrangements.
