How to get involved before Paediatrics training

You do not need a paediatric job to begin. Use supervised exposure and small, governed contributions that teach you how services for children and families work.

Arrange a taster across settings

Ask the local paediatric clinical tutor, Foundation team or rota lead for focused sessions in acute assessment, ward work, clinic, neonatology and community paediatrics. Set learning objectives and follow confidentiality, induction and supervision rules.

See RCPCH taster suggestions

Use child-health encounters in other specialties

General practice, Emergency Medicine, surgery, ENT, orthopaedics and psychiatry all contain opportunities to assess children, communicate with families, recognise safeguarding concerns and understand referral thresholds.

Read the RCPCH early-career guidance

Choose a small QI problem with an owner

Ask the ward, clinic or community team about a real safety or access problem: handover, time-critical medicines, discharge information, transition, follow-up or family communication. Agree a measure, intervention and review date before collecting data.

Use RCPCH QI Central

Teach for a defined need

Offer a short session for students, Foundation doctors or the wider team on a need the department identifies. Design it with a supervisor, collect proportionate feedback and improve the repeat session.

Join research through a network

The RCPCH Trainee Research Network links regional networks. GAPRUKI and PERUKI support multicentre general and emergency paediatric research. Ask what projects are open locally and what the collaborator role genuinely involves.

Listen to children and young people

RCPCH &Us and local youth forums show how services can involve children and young people in design, information and improvement. Participation must be appropriately governed; do not create unsupervised contact for an application project.
