Explore the work patterns you actually enjoy—patient contact, continuity, analytical depth, procedures, urgency and more—then use the result to choose specialties worth investigating in real life.
Already chosen? Explore interview preparationDesigned for overlap
Procedures occur in radiology, medicine, surgery, anaesthetics, emergency medicine, O&G, ophthalmology and other careers. Rapid switching is common well beyond emergency medicine. Radiologists can work across every age group. The chooser is deliberately designed around these overlaps rather than treating them as exceptions.
Working patterns, location, health, family commitments, training opportunities and the realities of recruitment also matter. Those practical factors are kept separate from the work-pattern model so they can be investigated transparently.
Check official specialty recruitment informationThis is a starting set of broad areas, not a complete list of medical careers. Internal Medicine and Surgery each contain many distinct specialties, and ranges within every specialty can be wide.

Six final trade-offs make small adjustments where different types of work compete.
Each specialty is represented by a range on all 12 dimensions, not a fixed score. The ranges deliberately overlap and are editorial starting points rather than validated psychometric norms. A characteristic such as procedures or rapid switching can fit several specialties at once.
“Not sure yet” does not push you towards or away from a specialty. If too many core answers are uncertain, your profile is very flat, or paired questions conflict repeatedly, the chooser withholds a shortlist rather than inventing precision.
Product availability never changes the matching model. NHS career profiles are linked for career descriptions; the questions, ranges and matching method are our own and are not endorsed or validated by the NHS.
A few useful answers
It focuses on the work you want to do rather than trying to assign you a personality type. The 24 core questions estimate 12 work-pattern preferences, then six low-weight trade-offs check how those preferences sit together.
No. Procedures, rapid switching, analytical work, continuity and other characteristics occur across many specialties. Each specialty is represented by an overlapping range across all 12 dimensions, so the pattern matters more than any one answer.
No. It is an editorial reflection tool designed to generate areas worth exploring. It does not assess ability, eligibility, competitiveness or future satisfaction, and it should not replace real clinical exposure or careers advice.
No. Practical factors such as working pattern, geography, training length, family compatibility and competition matter, but they are deliberately kept separate from the work-pattern match. Investigate them after you have a shortlist.
No. Product availability is not part of the matching model. Specialties without a preparation product can appear in the same way as specialties for which preparation is available.
