International applicants
Registration, immigration and first-NHS-post checks
An overseas degree or prior seniority does not establish the UK licence, sponsorship or grade for a particular post. Work through the GMC route and person specification first; the employer then handles hiring and sponsorship decisions.
GMC registration and licence
Check your exact route, primary qualification, internship, English-language evidence and any acceptable postgraduate qualification or examination. The employer may also require specific UK or specialty experience.
Right to work and sponsorship
A Health and Care Worker visa may be relevant to an eligible offered job with an approved sponsor. Confirm the vacancy's sponsorship position and current government rules; a shortlisting invitation is not a visa or a job offer.
First NHS shift
Ask about an induction, electronic records, local prescribing, resuscitation team, escalation, bleep system, safeguarding, supervision and a safe transition onto on-call. Do not imply that an observership alone proves competence to cover a rota.
References and work history
Prepare truthful dates, employer contacts and any required translated evidence early. NHS employers must complete checks appropriate to the post before you start.
Separate the decisions
Track registration, recruitment and permission to work separately
These processes can overlap, but approval in one does not settle the others. Keep each requirement, current status, requested evidence and next action visible. Avoid booking a move around an assumed processing time or treating an interview invitation as clearance to start.
1. Establish the registration route
Use the GMC's application guidance for your qualification and circumstances. Check the primary qualification, internship or relevant experience, English evidence and route-specific requirements. The PLAB application guide is one route, not a universal checklist for every international graduate. Record what is awarded, pending or still required, and use the GMC to resolve route questions.
2. Match the vacancy's requirements and timing
Copy the exact registration, experience and start-date requirements from the person specification. Ask the recruiter whether pending registration can be considered at application and what must be complete at appointment. Describe previous responsibilities and supervision in concrete terms; a familiar overseas title may not describe the same duties as this UK rota.
3. Resolve right to work or sponsorship for this job
If sponsorship is needed, ask the employer whether this vacancy can support it. A Health and Care Worker visa requires an eligible offered job, an approved employer, a certificate of sponsorship and the applicable salary and other conditions. Use current GOV.UK guidance for your circumstances; an employer's willingness to sponsor is not itself immigration permission. Avoid relying on remembered fees or processing estimates.
4. Prepare for checks and a safe start
Ask medical staffing what records, references and translations are required and through which secure route to submit them. Before the first shift, establish how to access records, prescribe locally, request urgent help and contact a supervisor. Ask who reviews readiness for on-call and how supported shifts work. Registration and previous experience do not remove the need to learn local systems.
