Plan backwards from Oriel
A practical Paediatrics ST1 application timeline
Build a balanced set of completed examples, then learn to describe them within the published word limits. A long list of activities cannot rescue vague ownership or missing reflection.
12+ months: test the work and start finishable projects
See acute assessment, a ward round, clinic, neonatology and community work if possible. Start one bounded QI or audit and one teaching activity that can produce an outcome and learning. Child-health relevance helps understanding, and the current rubric allows transferable examples from other settings.
6–12 months: create breadth and close obvious gaps
Build distinctly different clinical-capability and achievement examples. Finish data collection, present the QI locally, evaluate teaching and act on feedback. Join research only where your contribution can be accurately described; authorship is not the only credible role.
3–6 months: map evidence to each published descriptor
Draft an evidence table for transferable clinical capabilities, personal achievements, QI or audit, academic work and teaching. Record the setting, dates, your action, output, impact, reflection and a verifier. Identify repeated examples before they cost breadth.
Final weeks: write for assessors, not for yourself
The 2027–28 form uses 50-word boxes and dropdowns. Name the capability, give the concrete action and make the relevance or reflection explicit. Check the employment history, Foundation evidence, registration, reapplication forms and reasonable-adjustment evidence before submission.
After submission: build a selected portfolio
Interviewers do not see the application form. Prepare a small virtual selected portfolio covering motivation, useful achievements, specialty understanding and attributes. Keep the evidence truthful and speakable rather than memorising every form entry.
Interview period: rehearse four different functions
Practise a family-facing explanation, an informed motivation discussion, an F2-level paediatric reasoning scenario and reflection with a genuine change in practice. Work in ten-minute blocks and invite follow-up questions rather than delivering uninterrupted speeches.
Preferencing: compare a seven-year regional footprint
Ask where acute general paediatrics, neonatology, community placements, tertiary specialties and registrar-step-up experience occur. Include geography, rotations, nights, LTFT, teaching, research and realistic commuting. Rank only programmes you would accept.
