What not to spend time or money on
Avoid portfolio theatre
Use the official descriptor before paying for a course or starting a project. The aim is evidence you can finish and explain, not a crowded CV.
Do not buy an expensive course because it sounds paediatric
The current rubric has no standalone course-attendance domain. A course may be worthwhile for learning or local role requirements, but its certificate does not replace a scored example.
Do not sit MRCPCH early to manufacture application points
MRCPCH is central to training, but it is not a scored achievement in the 2027–28 shortlisting rubric. Study an exam because it fits your development and eligibility, not on the assumption that it awards ST1 points.
Do not repeat the same capability five times
The current clinical-capability and achievement descriptors reward distinctly different examples. Five versions of communication or five similar teaching awards could score below a broader set.
Do not chase a national presentation before finishing local work
A coherent QI with planning, a local presentation and clear results or recommendations could demonstrate more than an unfinished project with a prestigious target venue. Complete the clinical improvement first.
Do not treat passive membership as commitment
Membership can provide learning and access, but paying a subscription does not by itself show understanding, contribution or reflection. Join organisations you will actually use.
Do not oversell output status
Submitted is not accepted; accepted is not published; data collection is not project leadership. Precise status protects probity and makes the example easier to defend under follow-up.
