Candidate-reported · not official guidance
Recurring preparation themes from recent applicants
Public discussions are useful for finding friction points, but they cannot replace the scoring guide and should never be used to reconstruct proprietary or recalled interview questions.
Short answers exposed vague ownership
Applicants repeatedly discussed losing expected marks when examples sounded relevant but did not show the mechanism of their contribution or reflection. This aligns with the official glossary, which requires more than labels such as 'led' or 'designed'.
Distinct examples mattered
Candidates reported that similar capabilities were marked as duplicates. The official matrix independently confirms that higher scores required distinctly different examples, so breadth should be designed before drafting.
Feedback from current trainees helped with clarity
Applicants commonly sought review from ST1s and consultants. Use reviewers to test whether the action and reflection are understandable; do not ask them to rewrite an inflated claim or guarantee a score.
Research created disproportionate anxiety
Recent discussions often focused on publications and presentations. In the current rubric, academic work remains a smaller section than the two eight-mark reflective sections. Balance the whole application before chasing an output that cannot finish.
Interview groups were used for spoken repetition
Candidates looked for mock groups and practice partners. Rehearsal is useful when it trains listening, concise answers and follow-up; shared scripts can make people sound interchangeable and may preserve errors.
Early on-call accounts emphasised supervision and asking for help
Recent trainee discussions describe busy early shifts with close registrar support and a need to escalate early. Treat this as candidate experience; staffing, neonatal cover and local responsibility vary.
