Balanced career fit
Is Paediatrics for me?
Test the work against your preferences and tolerances. Enjoying children is necessary but does not describe the clinical, operational or emotional job.
You may enjoy the clinical reasoning
Children can deteriorate quickly, present non-specifically and have different normal ranges by age. The work rewards careful observation, trajectory, physiology, pattern recognition and knowing when uncertainty needs senior review.
Communication is three-way and developmentally variable
You work with the child or young person and their parent or carer, sometimes with different priorities. Consent, assent, capacity, confidentiality and safeguarding make communication clinically consequential.
The pace ranges from resuscitation to long-term coordination
Acute takes and neonatal units can be fast and interrupted; community and chronic-disease work require patient coordination, reports and sustained family relationships. Most careers include more than one pace.
Procedures exist but do not define the specialty
Cannulation, lumbar puncture, airway support and neonatal procedures matter in relevant settings. Much of the value comes from judgement, communication, diagnosis, monitoring and coordinating care.
Nights and exams are real costs
Training includes out-of-hours acute work and the four-part MRCPCH pathway. Rota gaps, winter pressure and emotionally difficult cases can affect recovery and study time.
Common myth: Paediatrics is adult medicine with smaller doses
Development, physiology, communication, prescribing, consent, safeguarding and disease patterns differ materially. Children also depend on family, school and social systems that shape safe care.
Common myth: prior paediatric experience is required
The 2027 person specification has no minimum paediatric experience and the current clinical-reasoning task is designed for applicants at F2-equivalent level. Informed exploration and transferable evidence still matter.
Common myth: children are usually healthy, so the job is light
A large acute volume may coexist with critical illness, disability, chronic disease, mental-health need and safeguarding. Emotional intensity and family communication add work even when admission numbers look modest.
