Training examinations
Where MRCPCH fits
MRCPCH is an essential part of paediatric training and consists of three theory examinations followed by one clinical examination. It is a training milestone, not a prerequisite for ST1 application.
Foundation of Practice (FOP)
FOP tests knowledge underlying everyday child-health practice. It is also the theory component used for the Diploma in Child Health pathway, but DCH and MRCPCH serve different career purposes.
Theory and Science (TAS)
TAS focuses on the scientific principles that support paediatric practice. Candidates can plan FOP and TAS around training and eligibility rather than assuming one fixed national sitting order for every trainee.
Applied Knowledge in Practice (AKP)
AKP tests applied knowledge and clinical decision-making across the paediatric curriculum. It is part of the theory sequence required before MRCPCH Clinical.
MRCPCH Clinical
The clinical examination follows completion of all three theory exams and assesses the clinical-skills standard expected of a newly appointed ST4. It can include real patients and tests examination, communication and integrated judgement.
Exams sit within capability-based progression
Passing exams does not replace workplace assessment, safeguarding, leadership or broad clinical capability. Plan study alongside sustainable rota work and use the current College regulations for attempts, eligibility and dates.
