The Progress+ training roadmap

Progress+ uses two capability levels rather than a rigid national list of year-by-year rotations: Core training across ST1–ST4 and Specialty training across ST5–ST7, with learning outcomes across 11 domains.

Core level · ST1–ST4

Build breadth across acute and general paediatrics, neonatology, community child health, safeguarding, communication, procedures, leadership, education, research, QI and patient safety. Rotations and sequence vary; progression depends on capability evidence and ARCP.

Stepping up to the registrar rota

The transition brings leadership of the acute team, supervision, bed and referral decisions and more direct consultant communication. It should follow demonstrated capability and planned support rather than simply a calendar date.

Specialty level · ST5–ST7

Develop the capabilities needed for consultant practice in General Paediatrics or an approved subspecialty. Leadership, complex care, supervision, service improvement and managing uncertainty become more prominent alongside clinical depth.

General Paediatrics and subspecialty CCT routes

Doctors who do not enter a specific subspecialty continue in General Paediatrics. RCPCH lists 17 paediatric subspecialty programmes with limited posts and competitive recruitment after Core training.

SPIN provides a special interest within general practice

A training SPIN is additional focused experience, usually equivalent to 12 months full time during Specialty level. It supports practice as a General Paediatrician with special expertise and is different from a GMC-recognised subspecialty CCT route.

LTFT and personalised progression

The curriculum explicitly supports personalised training length. LTFT changes the calendar and rota pattern, not the required capabilities. Programme capacity and placement design still matter, so discuss arrangements with the local school.
